The experience of participating CHINA-THINKS-BIG

In October 2021, I participated the competition named CHINA-THINKS-BIG with six of my classmates. CHINA-THINKS-BIG was the largest and most impactful research-based social entrepreneurship competition held by Harvard organizations in China. It was made up of 3 stages, which were the on-line stage, domestic stage, and Harvard stage. What’s more, during the stage on-line competition stage, we were asked to make a planning survey, an essay, a realization plan, and a presentation video. In addition, everyone played a role in the team, e.g. writer, designer, research fellow, and data analyst.

At the beginning of the competition, there were only 4 team members in our team. Meanwhile, we were looking forward to someone who did well in creativity and researching. Finally, we found a girl called Joyce to be the research fellow . The second decision was who would be the captain. I preferred to be the writer for the essay task rather than the team leader, so I refused to take on this position and highly recommended Elaine. As a writer, I firstly wrote a structural questionnaire to collect data, and it was a challenge for me, as I had never done this before. Nevertheless, when it came to the writing of an essay, Joyce was busy with her other competitions, and our leader, Elaine, wasn’t available with her studies. As a result, we almost got nothing ready before writing it except the questionnaire data. Meanwhile, the other writer who was called Evelynn, and I took the responsibility of completing the essay. The first thing we did was a to-do list for everyone according to their roles, then we used pie charts, histograms and tables to present our questionnaire data. The other thing we did was that we used different websites to search for documents, and we selected helpful resources to add to our essay. Finally, we completed it successfully.

I suppose that I learned to be responsible, and improve my leadership, executive force and communication skills during this experience. Above all, never give up easily as long as you have a reliable partner.

University of Bristol

Durham University

University of Glasgow

The London School of Economics 伦敦政治经济学院(LSE)

University of Nottingham

University of Oxford

SOAS University of London

UCL Faculty of Laws

The LNAT’s questions fall into seven general categories: law, philosohpy, politics, media, science, ethics and education.

No prior knowledge of these subjects is required though having a general awareness of current affair is recommended.

Original Aspiration

A very important time for me was the latter half of 2019 when I went to Cambridge in the UK. For a junior high school student, this place is fantastic. I decided to accept further education at international high school in our country, so I could pursue higher education in the UK. In order to achieve this goal, I had to study hard and do well in senior high school entrance examination one year later.

During my preparation, I asked my English teacher for help, because she used to be an overseas student in the UK. As her course subject representative, I personally believed that she could give me some useful suggestions on my decision. As expected, she appreciated my courage and told me that passion comes first , and I should follow my heart to have a try. Furthermore, from my outstanding behavior at school, she agreed that I have developed strong leadership skills and was good at organizing my tasks, which include managing the whole class and classifying data. It was the reason that she provided me the enough encouragement to apply for International Department of JIN LING high school, and I felt that she was my source of confidence.

As the entrance examination would test 7 different subjects, I tried my best to manage my finite time. Therefore, I judged my subjects on whether they were problematic or not, and allocated my time depending on my understanding stage. If it was the subject that I was poor at, I devoted more time to review knowledge, instead of doing past papers. In contrast, if it was a subject that I did well in, such as Ethics and the Rule of Law, I preferred to practice my problem-solving skills. Then, I had achieved my original aspiration of studying in JIN LING high school. In addition, I further analyzed about the significance of applying to overseas universities in Britain. Overall, I think that current education system in our country is too focused on science and engineering education, which has petrified my thinking and ignores my sociological interest. I have a dream to embrace a bigger world. Even if it will be a challenge to study abroad, I am willing to devote my efforts to the field I loved.
